On our way from Stockholm to Malmö we stopped over in Kalmar to allow me a sufficient break in driving and check out the area including our whole next morning on the island, Öland (land of the windmills) right across the way.

We stayed in a hotel right on the Stortorget in the old town and this is Kalmar Domkyrka.

Taking a stroll around the area. There be some good eats around here, but spendy.

We walked over to Kalmar Slott. Excuse me for the excess photos but I was having a little fun with the camera.

The tunnel entrance to the main square inside.

Of course, they had their own chapel.

The main square inside the walls below. It turns out I saw a door and walked inside unbeknownst that it had been opened for this group and the staff didn’t realize that some unpaid guests had entered. Lo and behold Dave and the boys were still outside and I had to find my way out bc the door was now locked. Needless to say I got a free, quick look of the inside.

Looking at the castle from the other side.

Old water water right along the water in the old town with views to capture.

Today we are on Öland just checking out if there is anything to see. Turns out we stumbled on the bests of windmills in the area. This is The Queen (Drottningen). This is a Dutch mill that was brought over from the mainland and only the hood is rotatable. They were considered larger and more efficient.

This is The King (Kvarnkungen), it is the biggest Scandinavian post mill. The entire mill is turned on its post to face the wind. It was built in 1749 and had 2 post mills. When the wind was really strong it could produce 400 lbs of flour and grouts per hour. It weighs 140,000 lbs.

Longest line of surviving post mills on the island. Love the color that makes them stand out. Made some time in the 1800s but there were about 2000 windmills on the island in 1850.

Our visit took longer when we discovered Borgholm Slott. Bet you don’t know how to pronounce it. Very unassuming from the outside.

Through the entrance and we’re off to discover history as well as help the boys with their treasure map.

Loving the perspective between the walls.

A view out towards the hunting grounds and the water.

Another throne, but this was too funny not to capture.

There were some nice dark corridors as well as some gorgeous spaces with marble, even some cannonball damage.

Look at all those layers! Anybody know which bands have performed here or had music videos done here? It’s a famous place folks.

Out near the furthest bastion looking towards the castle from the wall.

A view of inside a bastion.
