On our way to our next destination we thought we’d check out Óbidos for the day. Such a fun, interesting town to visit and the merchants were great, too. I also got to walk on the wall around the entire town. It’s funny to note as in the beginning of our travels in Portugal we would try to speak in Spanish but would quickly find out that many people speak English.
Google maps originally tried to tell us to enter the city right under where Dave and Asher are standing on the wall. We were lucky that there was a spot near that entrance.
A full view of the castle, although the interior was closed. There was a lot going on outside the castle though. It’s from the 9th century.
Just a local heading to the bookstore.
Toren and I discovering the castle is closed and that the restaurant signs we followed led to the inside of the castle, so we thought we’d discover where this trail goes.
It turns out there was a medieval festival going on thus the banners ahead.
Such beautiful foliage decorating the streets here.LikeComment
On the castle wall looking back at the castle.
Wow! This wall encompasses the entire city.
Taking a look at the outside of the wall all the way back to the tower in one corner.
So, you can walk almost the entirety of the town on the wall. This here is a shot of the whole town from above a tower.
An interesting frame too good to pass up.
A view of the aqueduct outside the town from the wall.
Yes, we imbibed here. This is Ginja de Óbidos, a tasty liqueur from here. Super delicious!
A view of the wall as it intersects with the castle.
There was an artist “ironsmith” that really played up the stocks/pillory. Toren was hesitant but eventually he submitted to the fun. Calling all villagers to pay attention!
