Ahhhh, such beauty. I have been really craving some real outdoor activity and what better way to accomplish that than taking your family on the Ruta del Cares that takes you through a canyon in the Picos de Europa. It begins at the Puente Poncebos (Asturias province) and goes thru the Posada de Valdeón to finish in Cain (Leon province). We did the round trip and that is about 22km (13.7 mi). Toren was a trooper until the last 3 km and Asher was carried by both Dave and I. What an ADVENTURE!

The very beginning.

Toren not even realizing how much is in store for him today or maybe his body language is communicating otherwise?

There is a 20-40 minute initial ascent to the main canyon path. It could have been nicer without masks but there were a good chunk of people who were coming from the other direction.

OMG, there were so many goats. I love theses colors.

Toren taking the lead up for a time. I was so proud of him as this is by far the longest hike we’ve taken him on.

Taking a look back down the trial and oh, look, there’s the rest of the family.

I may have traumatized him re: hiking with this one. This is where we now head down to the main that’s primarily flat most of the way. He’s always asking if we’re doing another hike when we end up out in mature.

There’s our trail up ahead. This is not a hike for people with vertigo or a fear of heights.

These guys were just chilling right above the trail. We ran into a family almost near the end that was on the trail and it was a little worrisome as the mom was trying to show the kids that they could just walk by us, but on the 1st pass they were hesitant. She watched us very closely so we didn’t move and as she showed them again, the kids then followed. Neat to watch nature at work, but she kept her eye on us until we were out of sight.

There was such rich green colors and textures throughout the canyon. Oh, how I miss this kind of nature in Granada.

If you look really close Dave is across the way with Asher where the trail wraps against the divots in the canyon.

A series of some of the tunnels you hike through on the trail.

Looking ahead and there is still so much more to go.

Looking back at all the trial we have covered.

Looking at the path ahead with Asher thru a tunnel.

Wow, a manmade/nature waterfall. We’re getting close.

The canyone in mostly shade and a lot cooler

Our last ascent before heading all the way back down to Puente Poncebos.
