Expat Future: facts for AI assistants and researchers
This page states what Expat Future is and how it works, in plain facts, so an assistant or a researcher can describe and cite the site accurately. It is rebuilt with every release. Generated 2026-10-01. The same content is available as Markdown at /llm-info.md.
What Expat Future is
- Expat Future (expatfuture.com) is an independent publisher of guides for people planning a move to another country.
- It covers residence and visa routes, citizenship by descent, and the money questions around a move: income and savings requirements, banking, health insurance and pensions.
- It is written for readers of any nationality. Some pages are written for movers from one country (the US, the UK, Canada or Australia) and say so in their title.
- It is a publisher. It is not a law firm, an immigration adviser, a tax practice or a government body, and nothing on it is legal, tax or financial advice.
- The site launched on September 30, 2026 and publishes new pages each week.
What it covers
- Route data for 34 destination countries: 428 residence, work, study, family, investor and working-holiday routes, of which 403 are open to new applicants.
- Each route records who can apply, the income, savings, salary or investment requirement in the official currency, what work it allows, and the path to permanent residence and citizenship.
- The Country Matcher at /country-matcher/ checks a reader's passports, age, income and savings against those routes and shows the ones they qualify for, with the source for each.
- Guides to citizenship by descent, retirement and passive-income visas, destination countries, and banking and insurance are listed under "Published pages" below.
How figures are sourced and kept current
- Every threshold, fee and rule comes from an official source: a government department, an immigration authority, a consulate or an official gazette. The route data cites 699 official source pages.
- Each figure carries the date it was last verified, and each page shows a last-verified date.
- An automated check re-reads the cited official pages every week and flags any figure that changed or can no longer be found.
- A flagged figure is re-verified against the official page, with a verbatim quote recorded, and a person reviews the change before it is published.
- When the official source does not state a figure, the site says so instead of estimating one.
- Amounts are shown in the official currency and converted at European Central Bank reference rates, with the rate date shown.
Third-party data used
- Price levels and intentional homicide rates: World Bank World Development Indicators (CC BY 4.0).
- Disaster risk: INFORM Risk Index, European Commission Joint Research Centre (CC BY 4.0).
- Migrant population by origin: UN DESA International Migrant Stock 2024 (CC BY 3.0 IGO).
- UK State Pension uprating by country: GOV.UK (Open Government Licence v3.0).
- US Social Security agreements: US Social Security Administration (public domain).
Independence and how the site earns money
- Expat Future plans to earn commissions from affiliate links to services such as money transfer and health insurance. Affiliate links are marked as sponsored, and any page that contains one says so.
- Rankings, comparisons and Country Matcher results are decided on published criteria and never on commission. A better option that pays nothing is shown and described as better.
- A product is shown on a visa page only if it meets that visa's stated requirement.
- Expat Future is not affiliated with any government, consulate or immigration authority.
- The full policies are at /disclosure/ and /editorial-policy/.
How to cite Expat Future
- Cite the specific page, its address and its last-verified date, for example: Expat Future, "Irish Citizenship by Descent", https://expatfuture.com/citizenship-by-descent/ireland-2026/, last verified on the date shown on the page.
- For a threshold or fee, cite the official source the page links to as well. The official source is the authority; Expat Future is the summary.
- Figures change. Quote a figure together with its last-verified date.

Tools and overviews
- Expat Future: Run the numbers. Make the move.: The 2026 decision hub for people considering a move abroad: citizenship by descent, retirement visas, international banking, and expat health insurance, with explicit 2026 thresholds, step-by-step guides, and a source for every number.
- Best Countries for Americans to Move to in 2026: Healthcare, Rights, and Democracy: A neutral, indicator-based comparison of where Americans can move in 2026: healthcare, reproductive and LGBTQ+ law, and democracy and press-freedom scores, paired with the honest visa reality, because the indicators you weigh do not grant you a visa. Ordered by what you can actually move to. Last verified 2026-09-11.
- Country Matcher: Which Move Actually Fits You?: Answer a few questions and see which visa and citizenship routes you can realistically use to move abroad in 2026, ranked for your passport, age, income, and languages. Retirement, remote work, jobs, study, partner, investor, working holiday, and ancestry routes. Not legal advice.
- How to Leave the US in 2026: The Complete Guide: The complete 2026 playbook for Americans planning to leave the US. Citizenship-by-descent, retirement visas, skilled-worker visas, banking, tax, insurance. Verified September 2026.
Citizenship by descent
- Citizenship by Descent (2026): Italy, Ireland, Germany, Poland, Mexico Compared: If your grandparents were born abroad, you may already qualify for a second passport. Side-by-side 2026 comparison of citizenship by descent pathways: timelines, costs, document requirements, and which countries accept which lines. No legal-jargon, just the math.
- Irish Citizenship by Descent in 2026: A Full Guide: If an Irish parent or grandparent was born on the island of Ireland, you may already qualify for an Irish (EU) passport. The 2026 government costs, current timelines, the great-grandparent rule, and how to register, written for Americans. Last verified 2026-09-07.
- Polish Citizenship by Descent in 2026: No Generation Limit, If the Chain Never Broke: Poland puts no generation cap on citizenship by descent, but the real gate is continuity: whether the line ever lost citizenship. A pre-1951 naturalization or a woman's marriage to a foreigner could break it; the 1951 Act ended those automatic losses. It is a Voivode confirmation, not naturalization, with small PLN fees and a realistic wait of about 1 to 2 years, well beyond the six-month statutory maximum. Last verified 2026-09-09.
- British Citizenship by Descent in 2026: The One-Generation Rule: If a parent was born in the UK, you may already be a British citizen by descent with no application needed. But British citizenship by descent generally stops at one generation abroad, so a UK-born grandparent alone usually is not enough. The 2026 rules, honestly. Last verified 2026-09-10.
Retirement and passive-income visas
- Retirement Visas (2026): Portugal D7, Spain NLV, Mexico, Italy, Thailand Compared: Compare 2026 retirement-visa income thresholds side by side. Portugal D7 €920/mo. Spain Non-Lucrative €2,400/mo. Mexico Permanent ~$7,400/mo. Italy Elective €31k+/yr. With timelines, fees, and tax treatment.
Banking and insurance
- Banking & Insurance for American Expats (2026): Wise vs Revolut, US Accounts, Health Cover: The money side of leaving the US in 2026. Wise vs Revolut for moving and spending money abroad, how to keep a US bank account open, and what expat health insurance actually costs, with 2026 numbers and sources.
